Double Helpings: food, books and photography

Double Helpings is an occasional blog from Alan and Alona. We are obsessive food lovers and inveterate recipe attempters, so Double Helpings features concoctions, adaptations and occasionally something by the book (from one of many books in our rapidly expanding recipe collection).

Alan is vegetarian while Alona probably qualifies as a meat reducer but will not give up meat or fish completely. Fed up with Alan being offered the ubiquitous ‘tartlet’ when we go out, we started looking for recipes and restaurants which give both of us a great meal. At home we try to make every meal we cook as tasty as possible, aiming for dishes where you don’t miss the meat. Flavour and texture are important, but so are balance and variety.

Please take a look at our bookshelf posts, where we are starting ongoing reviews of cookbooks and food writing. As well as reading books, we also publish them – find out more about our publishing and other projects here.

The photos are mostly Alan’s and generally feature food of some sort. Contributing to Double Helpings is also excellent motivation for taking photos and experimenting with photography, so there will be a few photos taken here and there of things that inspire or intrigue.

A Squared

A Squared is a small independent publisher, aiming to publish cookery books, food writing, literary fiction and short stories.

Although our background lies in book publishing, we’re incredibly excited by the opportunities presented by new digital technologies. We’re interested in publishing work that combines the best of traditional book publishing with the most innovative aspects of new technologies. The best publishing should span media and break down traditional boundaries, and that’s exactly what we’re intending to do. As you can see, we’re just getting started – so if you’ve got some good ideas, and you’d like to get involved, please do get in touch.

If you’re an author or another publisher, we’ve got some excellent editorial and production skills that you might be interested in. Find out more about what we do, or say hello for ideas about how we can help you.
